Travel to Shonai on Day 4!

We made it Shonai from Tokyo today.  It was a beautiful train ride with ocean and mountain views.  We had a quick and wonderful lunch at a very traditional restaurant and then off to our first game.



Junro's old school was the host's for our first game. Prematch meal in the bellies and we are ready for action.

 Everyone's a little nervous, other than Nacho, who is still in party mode after his dancing last night.














It proved to be a very difficult encounter.  We weren't quite at ourselves, with travel, nerves and humidity taking a toll on the boys. They were wonderful hosts and we were very accommodating guests as we let them score a bunch of goals.  I think the final was 6-0.  The performance was not what we hoped for and we know better games and performances are in front of us.

 Respect is what it is all about.  I am so impressed with the customs these guys have.  We will learn from this and adapt and adopt it in the future.

Can't believe it's all over.  Just sitting in Austin reflecting on a perfect two weeks.  The last couple of days were packed so I'm just now getting a chance to post.  Our final day in Shonoi was busy with two soccer games.  The first match was against Shonai high school.  It was a fun game with a final score of 1 - 0 (SSTX).  Our second game was against the state champions and what a game.  We knew this would be our toughest but it was also by far our best performance.  We competed well over-all and had to deal with the most complete team we have seen in youth soccer in some years.  We battled hard and in the end came away losing 2 - 0 but with our heads held high.  Final goodbyes with host families.  Our last night in Tokyo with a special meal at Gonpachi (famous for a scene in Kill Bill).  The food was great.  After dinner Karao...

Ninjas and Movie Sets.

This is Shane here giving the words as Kim provides the images.  I wanted pictures of this place because I want one!  This is the indoor center they have in Shonai Town, walking track around the top and wonderful field for practice where it is 75 degrees all day, every day.  We played a 30 minute scrimmage with a local J-League youth Academy team, falling 1-0 to a poor goal.  Many positive from the exercise though as the boys are gaining confidence and sharpness.  Kim shot video of the game which may be uploaded when we get a stronger internet connection.  Afternoon trip to Studio Sedic, a large outdoor filming facility which has been used for many famous Japanese movies.  You may recognize some of the actors in the following stills we captured.  I have a sneaky suspicion there may be ninjas around here.  You can see the fear in their eyes as deadly Ninja Hutch attacks without warning, much to the entertain...
